The Codename Token and Faction Token are items available in the in-game Store for Agents who wish to change their codename or Faction directly within the Scanner.
Important Prerequisites
- These items are exclusively visible and available to Agents who have reached Level 4 (70,000 AP) or higher.
- Both Tokens are subject to a 90-day cooldown between purchases. The remaining cooldown time can be viewed directly on the item details page in the Store.
- Purchases of the Codename Token and Faction Token are immediate, irreversible, and non-refundable. Subsequent selections cannot be altered or canceled once confirmed. If an Agent utilizes a Faction Token but ultimately chooses to remain with their current Faction, the Token Token is still consumed and the 90-day cooldown applies.
How to Change a Codename
- Open the in-game Store.
- Purchase the Codename Token.
- Enter a new codename when the prompt appears.
- Submit the codename to complete the change.
Codename Requirements & Validation
- New codenames must follow the same requirements as initial Ingress registration, including constraints on length and strict content moderation (e.g. no profanity).
- Codenames may only contain alphanumeric characters. Spaces and special characters are not accepted.
- Agents cannot claim a codename that is currently in use or that has been previously used by another Agent. If a desired codename is unavailable or not allowed, a different valid codename must be submitted to complete the process.
- All codename changes are subject to review by the Ingress operations team and may be voided if the selected name violates Ingress community guidelines.
How to Change a Faction
- Open the in-game Store.
- Purchase the Faction Token.
- Select either Enlightened or Resistance when the prompt appears.
- Confirm the choice to complete the change.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why are the Codename Token and Faction Token missing from the Store?
- These items are only visible and available for purchase to Agents who are Level 4 (minimum 70,000 AP) or higher.
- How often can these Tokens be used?
- Both Tokens feature a 90-day cooldown between purchases. This timer begins immediately upon completing the purchase. Another Token of the same type cannot be purchased or used until this timer expires.
- Do these changes take effect immediately?
- Yes. Both codename and Faction changes take effect immediately after confirmation in the Scanner.
- Are Token purchases eligible for a refund?
- No. Purchases of the Codename Token and Faction Token are immediate, irreversible, and non-refundable.
- What happens to Agent progression, profile statistics, and inventory?
- Agents retain their current Agent Level, current AP, lifetime AP, achievements, medals, profile statistics, Mission Badges, full item inventory, and Portal Keys already in their possession. Agents will not be reset to Level 1.
- Does a Faction change affect access to level-based tools?
- No. Because Level and AP are fully retained, Agents retain uninterrupted access to high-level system tools, such as Portal Edits and Mission Authoring.
- What happens to deployed Portals, Resonators, Mods, Links, and Fields following a change?
- With a Faction change: All Portals, Resonators, Mods, Links, and Fields deployed by the Agent prior to the switch remain aligned to the previous Faction. Because these infrastructure assets remain loyal to the old Faction, it becomes possible for the Agent to attack their previously deployed Portals.
- With a Codename change: All active deployed Portals, Resonators, and Mods automatically update to reflect the new codename.
- Can an Agent reclaim a previous codename later, or will it become available for others?
- No. Previously used codenames are not valid for reuse. Once an Agent has successfully changed their codename, the previous codename is permanently retired by the Ingress operations team. It will no longer be available for future use by that Agent or any other Agent.
- Can a codename change be reversed?
- Codename changes are subject to review by the Ingress operations team and may be reverted if the selected name violates community guidelines.
- If an Agent decides to stay with their current Faction after purchasing a Faction Token, is the item still consumed?
- Yes. If an Agent selects their current Faction during the prompt, the item is consumed and the 90-day cooldown applies.
- Does this replace the Faction choice during Recursion?
- No. The existing option to choose a new Faction upon achieving Agent Recursion remains entirely unchanged.
- What happens if the Scanner crashes or closes during the selection process?
- The purchase remains secure. If the process is interrupted before a selection is completed, a pending Token prompt will reappear immediately at the next login. Tapping this prompt allows the Agent to finish the selection before any other game actions.
NIA Recommendation: Retain your current alliance. Have faith, this did not happen by chance, you were chosen.
